Numbers 26:19

The sons of Judah were Er and Onan: and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

Numbers 26:19 (KJV)

The Book of Numbers records Israel’s journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. This verse belongs to the second census, taken by Moses and Eleazar the priest on the plains of Moab, to count the men eligible for military service before entering Canaan. Judah, one of the twelve sons of Jacob, was a prominent tribe, and this census lists his descendants.

The verse names Er and Onan as sons of Judah and notes that both died in the land of Canaan. Because they were already dead, they are not counted among the clans listed in Numbers 26:20-22, which include only Shelah, Perez, and Zerah. Their deaths are explained in Genesis 38:1-10. Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord took his life. Onan, the second son, refused to fulfill his duty under the levirate marriage custom to raise up offspring for his deceased brother; his action displeased the Lord, and the Lord also took his life.

Despite the tragedy, Judah’s line continued through Shelah and through Perez, born to Judah and Tamar (Genesis 38:29-30). Perez became an ancestor of King David and, ultimately, of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:3). This genealogical record shows how God’s purposes advanced through a specific family even amid human failure.

This brief notice reminds us that sin and disobedience bring judgment, and that God, as the giver and sustainer of life, has the authority to determine life and death. His purposes are not always fully revealed to us, yet He remains sovereign in the lives of His people. The verse calls us to faithfulness and obedience, trusting that God’s plan continues even when human choices bring sorrow.

God’s faithfulness does not depend on human perfection. Though Er and Onan died in Canaan, the tribe of Judah still carried the promise of the Messiah. This encourages us to consider how God can work through our own imperfect histories to accomplish His will.
