Numbers 26:39

Of Shupham, the family of the Shuphamites: of Hupham, the family of the Huphamites.

Numbers 26:39 (KJV)

Numbers 26 records the second census of Israel, taken on the plains of Moab near the end of the wilderness wanderings. God commanded Moses to count the new generation that would enter the Promised Land, since the generation that left Egypt, except Caleb and Joshua, had died in the wilderness because of unbelief. This census prepared Israel to divide the land among the tribes.

This verse names two families within the tribe of Benjamin: the Shuphamites, descended from Shupham, and the Huphamites, descended from Hupham. These names appear in Genesis 46:21 as sons of Benjamin, though with different spellings. The census records each clan by name, showing that every family mattered to God. The total number of Benjamin’s fighting men was 45,600, a sign that the tribe had grown strong despite the wilderness years.

The census in Numbers 26 connects to God’s promise to Abraham to make his descendants numerous. The careful listing of families shows that God keeps His covenant through specific people and their descendants. The old generation’s disobedience disqualified them from entering the land, but their children now stand ready to inherit what God had promised.

This record reminds us that God sees and values each person and family. No name is too small to be written in His book. Just as the census gave each tribe its inheritance, God has prepared a place for every believer. We can trust Him to fulfill His promises, even when we wait through long seasons.

God’s faithfulness does not depend on our strength. The new generation entered the land not because they were better, but because God remained true to His word. Let this verse encourage you to walk in obedience, knowing that God is preparing an inheritance for those who follow Him.
