Numbers 26:47

These are the families of the sons of Asher according to those that were numbered of them; who were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.

Numbers 26:47 (KJV)

The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible, named for the two censuses, or numberings, of the Israelites. The first census took place at Mount Sinai after the people left Egypt. The second census, recorded in Numbers 26, happened on the plains of Moab near Jericho. This census counted the new generation that would enter the Promised Land, and it determined the number of men eligible for military service. It also organized the tribes for the conquest of Canaan and for the fair allocation of the land.

This verse lists the families of the sons of Asher and gives their total as 53,400 men. Asher was the eighth son of Jacob and the second son of Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid. The tribe of Asher later settled in the northern part of Canaan, between Mount Carmel and the territory of Naphtali, a region known for its rich agricultural produce, including olive oil and wheat. The number 53,400 is a specific historical record, not a symbolic figure. It shows the tribe’s strength and size at that time, and it reflects the order and structure that God established for His people. Each family within the tribe was counted and given a place in the community.

The first census in Numbers 1 listed Asher with 41,500 men. The increase to 53,400 shows the tribe’s growth during the wilderness years. This growth fulfils God’s promise to multiply Abraham’s descendants. The detailed listing of families also shows the importance of family lineage and tribal identity in Israel’s covenant community. Each family had a place and a future inheritance in the land God promised. The census also serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in preserving His people through the wilderness, despite the judgment that fell on the previous generation.

This verse teaches the value of order and planning. God organised His people by tribes and families for military readiness and for fair distribution of the land. In our own communities and churches, careful organisation helps us serve one another well. The census also reminds us that God is faithful. He preserved this new generation through the wilderness, even after the previous generation fell under judgment. We can trust Him to keep His promises to us. Just as God counted each family, He knows each of us by name and cares for our needs.

Each tribe had a unique role within Israel, and each family within Asher was counted and valued. This points to the beauty of diversity and unity among God’s people. No person was overlooked. In the same way, every believer has a distinct place and purpose in the body of Christ. God sees each one and provides for each one. This verse encourages us to recognise our own place in His plan and to honour the roles of others. It also calls us to trust that God’s order and provision are good, even when we cannot see the whole picture.
