Numbers 29:24
Their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, shall be according to their number, after the manner:
Numbers 29:24 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the instructions for the Feast of Tabernacles, described in Numbers 29:12-38. On the fourth day of this seven-day feast, the Israelites offered one bullock, one ram, and seven lambs, each with its grain and drink offering. The phrase “meat offering” in the King James Version means a grain or meal offering, not meat. “Drink offerings” were wine poured out beside the altar.
Meaning
The words “according to their number, after the manner” show that each animal had a fixed amount of grain and wine. This was not left to human choice. God gave a precise pattern, and the people were to follow it exactly. The offerings were proportionate: larger animals received more grain and wine. This taught the people that worship involves careful obedience, not careless habit.
Biblical connections
The same formula appears earlier in the chapter, such as Numbers 29:18 and Numbers 29:21, showing consistency in worship. The whole sacrificial system pointed forward to Christ, who fulfilled it once for all, as Hebrews 10:1-14 explains. Yet the principle of giving God our best remains.
Application
For believers today, this verse calls us to offer our best to God. Our “offerings” may be time, talents, or resources, but they should be given with sincerity and without hidden faults. Worship is not only inward feeling; it includes tangible actions done according to God’s Word. The feast also reminds us that worship is corporate, not just private.
Reflection
The abundance of offerings during this feast reminds us that worship is joyful and generous. It is also corporate, as the whole community celebrated together. When we give God our whole selves, we honor Him and reflect the reverence He seeks. This pattern of precise, generous worship still guides our hearts today.
