Numbers 29:27
And their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, shall be according to their number, after the manner:
Numbers 29:27 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers records Israel’s wilderness journey after deliverance from Egypt. Numbers 29 gives instructions for the Feast of Tabernacles, also called the Feast of Booths or Ingathering. This was a major annual festival of joy and thanksgiving. Verse 27 belongs to the offerings prescribed for that feast.
Meaning
The verse speaks of the meat offering and drink offerings for the bullocks, rams, and lambs. In the King James Version, “meat offering” means a grain offering, not flesh. Each burnt offering was accompanied by a fixed amount of fine flour, oil, and wine. The phrase “according to their number, after the manner” shows that every animal had its own corresponding gift. God gave exact rules for these offerings, and the people were to follow them faithfully. This precision was not arbitrary; it taught Israel that worship is not casual or improvised. God revealed the pattern, and obedience meant doing it His way.
Biblical connections
The general rule for these accompanying offerings appears in Numbers 15:1-12. There God specified how much flour, oil, and wine belonged with each bullock, ram, and lamb. Numbers 29 repeats this pattern for each day of the feast, using similar words in verses 18, 21, 24, 30, 33, and 37. This repetition stresses order and completeness in worship. The offerings themselves pointed ahead to Christ, whose perfect sacrifice fulfilled the law and brought eternal redemption. As Hebrews 10:1 explains, the law was a shadow of good things to come, not the image of those things. So these detailed rituals find their fulfillment in Jesus.
Application
God cares about the details of our obedience. The Israelites could not choose their own amounts or methods; they followed His revealed will. Our worship should also be grounded in Scripture, not in personal preference. We can honor God by giving Him our best, with reverence and wholehearted devotion. The principle of “according to their number” reminds us that faithful service includes careful, consistent action. When we serve in church, give to others, or pray, we can do so with the same attention to God’s Word. This does not mean rigid ritualism, but a willing heart that takes God’s commands seriously.
Reflection
This verse calls us to examine how we approach God. Do we treat worship as casual or as a sacred duty? The feast was a time of joy, yet it required precise obedience. We can learn to balance celebration with reverence. As we give our time, talents, and resources, we can do so in an orderly way, remembering that God sees and values our faithful service. Let us ask the Spirit to help us worship in spirit and truth, with both joy and carefulness.
