Numbers 3:31

And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all the service thereof.

Numbers 3:31 (KJV)

The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey from Egypt to the Promised Land and God’s instructions to Moses about the Levites, the tribe set apart for Tabernacle service. Numbers 3:31 gives the specific charge to the Kohathite clan of Levites. Their duty was to care for the most sacred objects and the associated service of the sanctuary, especially when the Tabernacle was taken down and transported during the wilderness travels.

The Kohathites were entrusted with the Ark of the Covenant, the holy chest that held the tablets of the Ten Commandments. Their role in carrying and guarding the Ark showed the seriousness of preserving God’s covenant with His people. They also cared for the table of showbread, the golden lampstand, and the altars used for offerings. Each item held both symbolic and practical meaning in Israel’s worship. The verse also mentions the vessels of the sanctuary, such as bowls and cups used in the rituals. The Kohathites handled these implements so that worship was done with reverence and order. Their duty extended to “the hanging,” likely the curtain that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place, and to all the work of setting up, maintaining, and taking down the Tabernacle. Because these objects were holy, their service required great care and attention.

This detailed assignment shows that God cares about order and reverence in worship. The New Testament teaches that believers are entrusted with the gospel and are to serve faithfully with the gifts God has given them. As Romans 12:1 calls us to present ourselves as living sacrifices, the Kohathites’ example reminds us that all service in God’s house is significant. Their work enabled worship to continue as the people traveled, showing that faithful stewardship keeps the presence of God central in every season.

Each believer is invited to use the gifts and talents entrusted to us in service to the body of Christ and the advancement of God’s kingdom. Though our tasks differ, the underlying principle remains: faithful, wholehearted service to the Lord, performed with excellence and a heart of love. The Kohathites’ dedication is a model of diligence, integrity, and devotion in carrying out God-given responsibilities. We too are accountable for what God has placed in our care, whether spiritual gifts, relationships, or opportunities to serve.

Numbers 3:31 not only records a concrete set of duties for the Kohathites but also points to a broader call for all Christians to serve God diligently, honoring the sacred trust He places in each of us. Consider how you can handle the holy things in your life with the same reverence and care.
