And the bootie being the rest of the pray which the men of war had caught, was six hundred thousand, and seuenty thousand, and fiue thousand sheepe, Numbers 31:32 (KJV)

Context: Numbers 31 recounts the account of the Israelites’ war against the Midianites. God commanded Moses to avenge the Israelites by attacking the Midianites because they had enticed the Israelites to worship their gods, leading them into immorality and idolatry. Moses led the Israelite army into battle and they were victorious. After the battle, the soldiers returned with a significant amount of spoils of war, including livestock.

The verse records that the booty, being the rest of the prey which the men of war had caught, amounted to six hundred thousand sheep, seventy thousand goats, and five thousand additional livestock (camels or asses). The large numbers indicate the abundance of the spoils and demonstrate how God blessed the Israelites with material wealth as a result of their obedience and victory in battle.

God’s provision and fulfillment of promises are evident throughout the Israelites’ journey in the wilderness. This passage shows God providing for their needs once again by granting an abundant amount of livestock, reminding us that He fulfills His promises and cares for His people even in times of conflict.

The value of obedience is highlighted by the fact that the victory and the acquisition of spoils came as a direct result of the Israelites’ obedience to God’s command to engage in battle. Obedience to God’s instructions leads to blessings and demonstrates trust in His guidance.

Stewardship and responsibility are implicit in the receipt of such wealth. The captured livestock formed part of the spoils of war, and the Israelites were called to manage and use these resources wisely, honoring God with what He has given them.

Symbolically, sheep often represent believers and followers of God. The great number of sheep captured may symbolize the spiritual significance of the victory, representing the deliverance of God’s people from the influence and oppression of idolatry and a return to a closer relationship with Him.
