Numbers 31:31

And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.

Numbers 31:31 (KJV)

In Numbers 31, the Israelites go to war against the Midianites because the Midianites had led them into idolatry and sexual immorality, stirring God’s anger. God commanded Moses to take vengeance. After the victory, Moses and Eleazar the priest were responsible for dividing the spoils and carrying out God’s instructions.

This verse shows Moses and Eleazar doing exactly what the Lord commanded. Their obedience was not partial or careless; it was complete. Moses, as leader, and Eleazar, as high priest, worked together to fulfill God’s orders. Their precise action reveals trust in God’s wisdom and judgment. They did not question or turn aside from His commands, recognizing that His ways are just and righteous.

Eleazar’s role as priest was vital. He relayed God’s ordinances to the warriors (Numbers 31:21) and received the tribute for the Lord (Numbers 31:41). This shows the priest’s duty in mediating and administering God’s instructions. The distribution of spoils and the tribute remind us that all victory and provision come from God, and His people honor Him with a portion of what He gives.

Obedience to God remains essential for believers today. We should follow His commands and trust His wisdom, even when we do not fully understand His plans. Like Moses and Eleazar, we can have confidence in God’s guidance, knowing He works all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). Leaders, in particular, should lead with integrity, faithfully executing God’s commands. We are also called to seek God’s will through prayer, reading His Word, and relying on the Holy Spirit’s leading, then respond obediently.

This passage calls us to examine our own hearts. Do we obey God completely, or do we pick and choose? True obedience flows from a heart submitted to God’s authority. Even when His path is hard, we can trust that His commands are for our good. Let us follow the example of Moses and Eleazar, doing as the Lord commands, and honor Him with all we have.
