Numbers 31:7
And they warred against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded Moses, and they slew all the males. Numbers 31:7 (KJV)
The book of Numbers, the fourth book of the Bible, records the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. In this chapter the people prepared to wage war against the Midianites. Prior to this event the Israelites had been seduced by the Midianites into worshiping their gods and engaging in sexual immorality, which brought a plague that killed twenty‑four thousand Israelites. To purify the people and avenge the Lord’s honour, God commanded Moses to take a thousand men from each of the twelve tribes and go to war against the Midianites.
The phrase “as the Lord commanded Moses” emphasizes the divine authority behind the Israelites’ actions. God instructed Moses to mobilise a thousand men from each tribe to ensure the execution of His judgment. The Israelites obeyed, warring against the Midianites and slaying all the males, including Balaam, as recorded in Numbers 31:9. The LORD had spoken to Moses, saying, “Take ye vengeance on the Midianites…”
Targeting the males served two purposes: it removed the immediate military threat posed by the warriors and delivered God’s judgment on a people who had led Israel into sin and idolatry. The passage reminds believers of the seriousness of sin’s consequences and the importance of remaining faithful to God, avoiding actions that lead others astray.
While the Bible records instances of warfare within its historical context, Christians are called to interpret such passages through the lens of the New Testament, which emphasizes love, forgiveness, and peace. Balancing justice and mercy is essential; God is both just and merciful, and believers should seek to embody these attributes, extending mercy while upholding righteousness.
Application points include faithful obedience to God’s commands, recognizing the consequences of sin, and understanding cultural and historical context. By studying the whole counsel of Scripture, believers gain a comprehensive perspective that points to the redemptive work of Jesus Christ and guides them in living out justice, mercy, and love in today’s world.
