Numbers 31:8
And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.
Numbers 31:8 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey from Egypt toward the Promised Land. In Numbers 31, God commanded Moses to take vengeance on the Midianites because they had deceived Israel into idolatry and immorality at Peor, which brought a plague upon the people (Numbers 25:1-9).
Meaning
This verse records the execution of divine judgment on Midian. The Israelites carried out God’s command by defeating the Midianites, killing not only the warriors but also the five kings of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba. These kings were petty rulers or princes, possibly under the king of Moab, and are connected to the dukes of Sihon mentioned in Joshua 13:21. Additionally, they killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword. Balaam was a prophet who had been hired to curse Israel but was unable to do so because God turned his intended curse into blessing. His death here is a direct consequence of his counsel to ensnare Israel through the Midianite women, as noted in the parallel account in Joshua 13:22.
Biblical connections
The defeat of the Midianites highlights the reality of spiritual warfare. The Israelites were not only engaged in physical battle but also in a spiritual conflict against the forces of evil that sought to destroy them. The execution of Balaam shows that no one who opposes God’s people can escape His justice.
Application
As believers, we should seek to obey God’s commands and follow His instructions, even when they may be difficult or challenging. We should understand that sin has consequences and strive to live in a way that is pleasing to God and aligned with His Word. We can rest in the assurance that God is just and righteous, and He will bring justice in His perfect timing, holding the wicked accountable and vindicating His people.
Reflection
God is just and righteous, and He holds nations and individuals accountable for their actions. The Midianites were punished for leading the Israelites astray and participating in idolatry and immorality. This reminds us that our actions have consequences, and we should seek to live in obedience to God’s will, trusting that His commands will be fulfilled.
