And they remooued from Almon-Diblathaim, and pitched in the mountaines of Abarim, before Nebo. Numbers 33:47 (KJV)

The book of Numbers, the fourth book of the Bible, gives a detailed account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. In chapter 33 Moses records the successive places where the people camped during their forty years of wandering in the wilderness. Each time the community moved, they would remove their tents from one location and pitch them in another, marking a new stage in God’s providential guidance.

The verse in focus describes one such stage: the Israelites left Almon‑diblathaim and set up camp in the mountains of Abarim, “before Nebo.” Almon‑diblathaim was a campsite whose precise location is uncertain, but scholars place it somewhere in the wilderness of Moab, east of the Jordan River. After departing from that site the people entered the mountainous region known as Abarim. The Abarim range lay in the territory of Moab and overlooked the Jordan Valley, and the phrase “before Nebo” indicates a position near Mount Nebo.

Mount Nebo holds special significance in biblical history. It is the mountain from which Moses, at the end of his life, was permitted to view the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 34:1‑5). Although Moses was barred from entering the land because of his disobedience, God graciously allowed him to see it from a distance. The Israelites’ encampment near Nebo therefore represents a moment of transition, as they continued their pilgrimage toward the land God had promised their ancestors.

While the verse may appear to be a simple geographical note, it carries spiritual lessons. It reminds believers of God’s steadfast faithfulness in leading His people through deserts and uncertainties, despite human failings. The narrative also underscores the importance of obedience; Moses’ disobedience prevented him from entering the promised inheritance, warning readers to heed divine instruction. By trusting God’s direction and remaining obedient, believers can follow the same path toward the fulfillment of God’s promises.

In conclusion, Numbers 33:47 records a pivotal stop in the wilderness journey—leaving Almon‑diblathaim and camping in the mountains of Abarim near Mount Nebo. This movement illustrates God’s continual guidance, the necessity of obedience, and the ultimate hope of reaching the Promised Land.
