Numbers 33:48

Posted on 4 March 2024
Listen to this article

And they departed from the mountaines of Abarim, and pitched in the plaines of Moab, by Iordan neere Iericho. Numbers 33:48 (KJV)

This verse is part of the larger passage in Numbers that records the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. It specifically describes their movement from the mountains of Abarim to the plains of Moab by the Jordan River, near (or opposite) the city of Jericho.

Journey towards the Promised Land

The book of Numbers primarily focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the land that God had promised to give them. Verse 48 marks another step in that journey as they continue to make progress toward their destination.

Obedience and God’s guidance

Throughout their wanderings the people were instructed to move and camp in specific locations as directed by God. Numbers 33 provides a detailed account of the places where they camped, revealing their obedience to God’s guidance and their trust in His leading.

Symbolism of the Promised Land

The Promised Land represents the fulfillment of God’s covenant with Abraham and the realization of His promise of a land flowing with milk and honey. Moving toward the plains of Moab by the Jordan signifies a significant step closer to the fulfillment of that promise.

Historical and geographical context

Abarim was a mountain range on the east side of the Jordan River; Moab lay east of the Dead Sea; Jericho was situated in the Jordan Valley, opposite the Moabite side of the river. Understanding this geography helps us visualise the Israelites’ progress and the physical locations mentioned in the verse.

Spiritual lessons

Although the verse does not contain explicit doctrinal teaching, it can be seen as a metaphor for our own spiritual journeys. It reminds us of the importance of following God’s guidance, being obedient to His instructions, and persevering on the path He has set before us.

By studying this verse within its larger narrative and considering the themes it represents, we gain a deeper appreciation of the Israelites’ pilgrimage and can draw relevant spiritual insights for our own lives.
