Numbers 34:29

These are they whom the Lord commanded to divide the inheritance unto the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.

Context

This verse closes a longer passage, Numbers 34:16-29, where God tells Moses to appoint one leader from each tribe of Israel. These men were chosen to help divide the land of Canaan among the twelve tribes. The verse names them as the ones the LORD commanded to do this work. The command was not a suggestion; God laid His command upon them, obliging them to perform the task.

Meaning

The word “commanded” shows that this task was not optional or merely human. God laid His command upon these leaders, obliging them to act. They were to divide the land as an inheritance for the children of Israel. This was a solemn duty, done before God, and it required fairness and care. The leaders were to act in the presence of God, doing the work impartially and solemnly. Their responsibility was not just administrative; it was a sacred trust.

Biblical connections

The land of Canaan was the promised land that God had sworn to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (see Genesis 12:7). By appointing these leaders, God was fulfilling that ancient promise.
