Numbers 35:24

Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments:

Numbers 35:24 (KJV)

This verse is part of the laws about cities of refuge in Numbers 35. In ancient Israel, if someone caused another person’s death without planning it, the dead person’s nearest male relative, called the “revenger of blood,” could seek to punish the killer. To stop endless revenge, God told Israel to set apart cities of refuge. A person who killed accidentally could run to one of these cities and wait for a fair trial.

The verse says the congregation must judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood. The whole community, not just one leader, was responsible for examining the case. They had to decide whether the death was truly accidental or done with hatred. This kept justice from becoming personal vengeance.

The phrase “according to these judgments” points back to the rules God gave in the previous verses. The congregation did not decide by feeling or pressure. They followed clear laws. This protected the innocent from the avenger’s anger and also made sure the guilty did not escape. The next verse shows that if the slayer was found innocent, the congregation would return him to the city of refuge until the high priest died.

This system shows both justice and mercy. God cared about the value of life, so He did not allow murder to go unpunished. But He also cared about the person who killed by accident, so He gave a place of safety. The city of refuge is often seen as a picture of Christ, who offers sinners a safe place from the punishment of sin.

Christians today can learn from this verse that the community has a role in settling disputes fairly. Believers should seek wisdom together and follow God’s Word, not act out of personal anger. The church should protect those who have made mistakes while still upholding truth and justice.

God’s laws were not harsh but thoughtful. They gave a way for justice to be done without destroying lives. This verse invites readers to trust God’s way of fairness and to show mercy, just as He has shown mercy to us.
