Numbers 36:5
And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the Lord, saying, The tribe of the sons of Joseph hath said well.
Numbers 36:5 (KJV)
Context
This verse closes the book of Numbers as Israel stands ready to enter the Promised Land. The tribes have received their allotted portions, but a legal question has arisen about land belonging to the daughters of Zelophehad. In Numbers 27:1-11, these daughters asked to inherit their father’s land because he had no sons, and the Lord granted their request. Now the leaders of the tribe of Manasseh bring a new concern: if these women marry outside their tribe, their land would pass to another tribe, reducing Manasseh’s inheritance.
Moses does not answer on his own authority. He takes the matter to the Lord, and then he speaks to the people. The phrase “according to the word of the LORD” shows that Moses is delivering a divine ruling, not a human opinion. His leadership models a vital pattern: listen to the people, seek God, and communicate God’s will clearly.
Meaning
Moses affirms that the tribe of the sons of Joseph “hath said well.” Their concern is valid because it protects the tribal boundaries that God Himself established. The command that follows in Numbers 36:6-9 requires heiresses to marry within their own tribe so that the land remains in the family and tribe. This rule preserves the original allocation and prevents the transfer of inheritance from one tribe to another.
The verse teaches that God’s laws are not arbitrary. They address real, practical needs in the community. God cares about the details of daily life, including property and family. His instructions are given for the good of His people and the preservation of their heritage.
Biblical connections
The pattern here echoes the earlier case of the daughters of Zelophehad. In Numbers 27, God honors their request for justice. In Numbers 36, He confirms that the tribe’s concern is also just. Together, these passages show that God listens to His people and provides clear direction for disputes. The continuity of the land inheritance also points to God’s faithfulness to His promises concerning the land of Canaan.
Application
Believers can learn to bring their concerns to God and to godly leaders. When a matter is uncertain, the right response is to seek the Lord’s wisdom rather than rely on personal judgment. God honors legitimate concerns that align with His purposes, and He gives guidance for practical matters.
This passage also encourages respect for the boundaries and inheritances God has given. Just as Israel was to preserve tribal land, Christians are to steward what God has entrusted to them, whether family, resources, or responsibilities. Faithfulness in small details reflects trust in God’s overall plan.
Reflection
Moses acted as a mediator, but the ultimate authority was the Lord. The verse reminds us that God’s commands are just and good. When we face difficult decisions, we can follow the same pattern: present the matter to God, wait for His direction, and obey precisely. God cares about the details of our lives and provides wisdom for every situation.
