Numbers 5:16

And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the Lord:

Numbers 5:16 (KJV)

This verse stands within the law of jealousy in Numbers 5:11-31. God gave Moses instructions for a husband who suspected his wife of unfaithfulness but had no evidence. The ritual was to be performed in the presence of the Lord to determine the truth.

Before this verse, Numbers 5:11-15 describes the procedure. The husband was to bring his wife to the priest along with an offering of barley meal. This offering was a reminder of the seriousness of the matter. The ritual also involved holy water in an earthen vessel, dust from the tabernacle floor, and the loosening of the woman’s hair (Numbers 5:17-18).

In Numbers 5:16, the priest brings the woman near and sets her before the Lord. This act shows her accountability before God and emphasizes the gravity of the situation. The priest acts as God’s appointed mediator, facilitating the encounter rather than pronouncing judgment himself. The woman is placed in God’s presence, signifying that the matter is now under divine scrutiny.

The purpose of the ritual was not to prove or disprove guilt but to place the matter in God’s hands. The priest took holy water and dust from the tabernacle floor, mixed them, and made the woman drink. If she was guilty, the water would cause a curse with physical symptoms. If innocent, no harm would come, and she would be free from suspicion. This procedure shows that God is the ultimate judge who sees what human eyes cannot.

The priest’s role as mediator is central. By setting the woman before the Lord, the priest facilitated divine judgment and guidance. This also highlights the tabernacle as the dwelling place of God’s presence among His people. The principle that all things are open before God appears throughout Scripture, reminding believers that He defends the innocent and exposes the guilty.

This passage reflects God’s concern for the sanctity of marriage and the need for trust and fidelity. It shows that God cares for His people and provides a just and orderly way to address suspicion. Believers today can bring unresolved accusations to God in prayer, trusting Him to reveal truth and bring justice. The ritual demonstrates God’s provision for justice within the covenant community.

God sees what humans cannot. When trust is broken or accusations arise, He invites His people to place the matter before Him. The priest’s action points to a greater truth: God is the righteous judge who defends the innocent and exposes the guilty. This verse calls believers to rely on God’s wisdom and justice in every relationship.
