And he shall offer the ramme for a sacrifice of peace offerings vnto the Lord, with the basket of vnleauened bread: the Priest shall offer also his meate offering, and his drinke offering. Numbers 6:17 (KJV)

Context and Background: Numbers 6:17 is part of the instructions given by God to Moses concerning the Nazirite vow. The Nazirite vow was a voluntary dedication in which the individual refrained from cutting his hair, from consuming wine or any product of the grapevine, and from coming into contact with a dead body for a set period.

The Sacrifice of Peace Offerings: At the conclusion of the Nazirite period the person was required to bring specific offerings to the Lord. The primary offering was a ram offered as a peace offering, a sacrifice that expressed gratitude, fellowship, and communion with God.

The Basket of Unleavened Bread: In addition to the ram, the individual was to bring a basket of unleavened bread. Unleavened bread is made without yeast; in biblical symbolism yeast often represents sin or impurity. Offering unleavened bread signified a desire for purity and sincerity in worship.

The Meat Offering and Drink Offering: The priest was also to present a meat offering. One description notes that the meat offering consisted of fine flour mixed with oil and was offered on the altar. Another description states that the meat offering could be a portion of the ram itself. The drink offering involved pouring out wine as an offering to God.

Overall Significance: Numbers 6:17 underscores the importance of presenting sacrifices as a tangible expression of devotion, gratitude, and fellowship with God. The prescribed elements highlight the themes of purity, sincerity, and commitment that should characterize the believer’s relationship with the Lord.
