Numbers 6:16

And the priest shall bring them before the Lord, and shall offer his sin offering, and his burnt offering:

Numbers 6:16 (KJV)

Numbers 6:16 belongs to the instructions the Lord gave to Moses about the Nazirite vow. A Nazirite was a person who made a special promise to be set apart for the Lord for a certain time. This verse describes the priest’s part in that vow. The priest brings the Nazirite’s offerings before the Lord and offers them on the Nazirite’s behalf. The verse is part of a larger passage that explains how the vow was to be completed, showing that dedication to God involves both separation from certain things and active offerings of worship.

The verse names two offerings. The sin offering was given to make atonement for sin and to cleanse the person from any defilement. The burnt offering was a gift of worship, with the whole animal burned on the altar as a sign of complete surrender. The order is important: cleansing from sin comes first, then dedication. This sequence reflects the proper way to approach God—atonement for sin precedes wholehearted devotion. The priest acted as the appointed mediator, presenting these gifts to God in the name of the Nazirite. His action shows that worship is directed to God and must follow the way God has chosen. Even those specially dedicated to God need atonement; no one can approach God without cleansing.

The priest’s work points to Jesus Christ, our great High Priest. Jesus offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for sin, and He now brings believers before God. The call to offer ourselves as living sacrifices in Romans 12:1 echoes the burnt offering’s meaning of total devotion. The sin offering reminds us that all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory, as Romans 3:23 says, and that forgiveness comes through Christ’s sacrifice. The priestly role here also demonstrates the principle that a mediator is needed between God and His people—a need fulfilled in Christ, who is both the mediator and the perfect sacrifice.

This verse teaches that true devotion involves acknowledging sin, receiving cleansing, and offering oneself fully to God. Believers today can examine their own commitment, asking whether they are holding back any area of life. The priest’s role also highlights the value of spiritual leaders who guide and pray for the community, though every believer has direct access to God through Christ. Consider these practical steps:

  • Confess any known sin before presenting your service or worship to God.

  • Offer your whole life—not just part of it—as a living sacrifice to Him.

  • Thank God for Christ, who cleanses us and presents us before the Father.

The Nazirite’s offerings remind us that dedication is not only a private feeling but is expressed in concrete acts of worship. The priest brought the gifts before the Lord, showing that our devotion is to be presented to God in an orderly way. As we consider this verse, we can thank God for the cleansing He provides and recommit ourselves to live wholly for Him. Let the order of the offerings guide your own approach: first receive His cleansing, then offer your life in grateful surrender.
