Numbers 6:21
This is the law of the Nazarite who hath vowed, and of his offering unto the Lord for his separation, beside that that his hand shall get: according to the vow which he vowed, so he must do after the law of his separation.
Numbers 6:21 (KJV)
Context
Numbers 6:21 closes the section on the Nazarite vow, a voluntary act of consecration to the Lord for a set time. Earlier verses list its duties: no wine or strong drink, no contact with the dead, and unshorn hair during the period of separation. This verse gathers those rules into one binding law.
Meaning
Moses calls these instructions “the law of the Nazarite,” showing they apply to everyone who makes such a vow. The phrase “his offering unto the LORD for his separation” points to the required sacrifices, including the burnt, sin, and peace offerings described earlier. The clause “beside that that his hand shall get” means the prescribed offerings are not the limit; the Nazarite must also bring freewill gifts according to what he can afford. The final words stress faithful completion: “according to the vow which he vowed, so he must do.“
Biblical connections
The chapter follows the priestly blessing in Numbers 6:22-27, linking personal consecration with God’s blessing on His people. The Nazarite’s complete separation also points to Christ, who was wholly set apart for the Father’s will. This connection shows that true consecration is not merely external but reflects a heart fully devoted to God.
Application
This verse teaches that promises made to God are serious and must be kept. True devotion is not only inward feeling but concrete, practical obedience. The Nazarite’s offering was separate from his daily work, reminding believers that serving God goes beyond ordinary routines. The vow was voluntary, yet once made, it demanded faithful fulfillment. In the same way, our commitments to God require deliberate, consistent action.
Reflection
Consider what you have promised the Lord. Faithful fulfillment of a vow brings honor to Him and shapes a life of holiness. Let your devotion be wholehearted, matching your words with deeds.
