Numbers 6:27

And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.

Numbers 6:27 (KJV)

Numbers 6:27 closes the chapter that gives the law of the Nazirite vow, a special promise of dedication to the Lord. The same chapter also records the priestly blessing, sometimes called the Aaronic blessing, which the priests were commanded to speak over the people (Numbers 6:22-26). This verse is the final sentence of that blessing, and it explains what the blessing accomplishes.

The priests were the ones who pronounced the words, but the power to bless belonged to God alone. The Hebrew text makes this clear: the priests put God’s name on the people, and then God Himself says, “I will bless them.” The blessing was not a human wish or a magic formula. It was a divine promise attached to a faithful act of worship.

When God puts His name upon the children of Israel, He claims them as His own possession. In ancient times, a name carried the person’s character and authority. To bear God’s name meant that the people belonged to Him, lived under His protection, and were known as His people. This was a sign of intimate relationship and special status.

The phrase “I will bless them” is a direct promise from God. The blessing includes favour, protection, and provision, both spiritual and material. It is not earned by human effort but flows from God’s covenant love. The name of the Lord, especially the covenant name Jehovah, appears three times in the preceding verses (Numbers 6:24-26), showing that the blessing is personal and grounded in God’s faithful character.

This Old Testament blessing points forward to a greater blessing in Christ. Jesus is the perfect revelation of God’s name, and through Him believers receive every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3). The New Testament teaches that Christians are called by Christ’s name and are sealed as God’s own people. The principle remains the same: God desires to bless His people, and He has appointed means by which that blessing is pronounced and received.

As believers today, we can recognise that God has set His name upon us. Our identity as Christians is marked by His ownership, and we are called to live in a way that honours Him. When we trust and obey Him, we can be confident that He will bless us, though His blessings may not always match our immediate expectations. We should seek His will and trust His timing, knowing that His blessings are for our good.

Spiritual leaders still have a role in conveying God’s blessing and speaking His truth to the congregation. The priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24-26 can serve as a model for those who lead and encourage others. When we experience God’s blessings, we should give thanks and use them to serve others, because God blesses us not only for our own benefit but also so that we can be a blessing to those around us.

God’s name upon us is both a privilege and a responsibility. It reminds us that we belong to Him and that our lives should reflect His character. The promise of blessing is sure, but it calls us to faithful living. As we go through each day, we can rest in the truth that the God who put His name upon Israel also puts His name upon all who trust in Christ, and He will surely bless them.
