Numbers 7:5

Take it of them, that they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man according to his service.

Numbers 7:5 (KJV)

This verse is part of the dedication of the tabernacle and the altar. In Numbers 7, the leaders of the twelve tribes bring offerings on separate days. Their gifts include silver plates, basins, gold dishes, and six covered wagons with twelve oxen. Now the Lord tells Moses how to use these gifts.

The Lord says, “Take it of them, that they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.” The wagons and oxen were not for decoration. They were practical tools for carrying the tabernacle during the wilderness journey. God directs Moses to give them to the Levites, “to every man according to his service.” Each Levite received what his specific duties required. The Levites were the tribe set apart by God for the service of the tabernacle, responsible for its care, maintenance, and transportation. Their work was essential for worship to continue. The phrase “service of the tabernacle of the congregation” refers to the duties related to the functioning of the tabernacle, the central place of worship and communication with God.

The organized distribution reflects the order God established for worship. In Numbers 4, the Lord already assigned different tasks to the Levite families. The wagons and oxen were given to the families whose duties required heavy loads. This shows that God cares about the details of service and provides for the practical needs of His workers. The broader context of Numbers 7 shows the generosity of the tribal leaders and the unity of the nation in dedicating gifts for God’s service. This verse underscores the principle that God provides for His work through the willing gifts of His people, and those gifts are to be used faithfully in the service He has assigned.

This passage teaches stewardship. The tribal leaders gave valuable resources to support God’s work. Their giving was willing and generous. Believers today are called to support the work of ministry with their resources. God also assigns different roles to different people. Each role matters, and each person should serve faithfully according to the ability and resources God provides. The principle of giving according to one’s ability and allocating resources according to need is evident here. Worship involves both spiritual and practical elements, and God honors the willing service of His people.

God notices the practical needs of those who serve Him. He does not waste the gifts of His people but directs them to the right place. This verse encourages believers to give cheerfully and to trust that God will use their offerings for His purposes. It also reminds us that worship includes both spiritual devotion and practical service.
