Numbers 9:13

But the man that is clean, and is not in a journey, and forbeareth to keep the passover, even the same soul shall be cut off from among his people: because he brought not the offering of the Lord in his appointed season, that man shall bear his sin.

Numbers 9:13 (KJV)

Numbers 9:13 sits within God’s instructions about the Passover given to Moses. The surrounding verses allow those who are ceremonially unclean or away on a journey to observe it later. This verse, however, describes a man who is clean and not traveling, yet deliberately refuses to keep the feast. He has no excuse.

The Passover was a yearly festival remembering Israel’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt. Each family sacrificed a lamb and marked their doorposts with its blood, so the Lord would pass over their homes during the plague of the firstborn. The lamb stood for deliverance and atonement. To refuse this commanded offering was a serious offense. The phrase “cut off from among his people” means exclusion from the covenant community, a severe penalty. The man who could keep the Passover but would not bore his own guilt. The verse also says he did not bring the offering of the LORD in its appointed season. This shows that worship is not optional but a commanded duty.

The Passover lamb points to Christ, the Lamb of God, who was sacrificed for sins. Just as neglecting the old Passover brought judgment, ignoring Christ brings spiritual loss. The severe penalty for neglecting the Passover foreshadows the greater salvation in Christ and the importance of responding to Him in faith and obedience.

Believers today should take God’s appointed times of worship seriously. When we are able to participate but choose not to, we show neglect. This verse warns against presumption and willful disobedience. It calls us to respond to God’s commands with faithful action, not excuses. God’s commands are given for our good and His glory. We honor Him by obeying promptly and joyfully, not delaying or making excuses.

Personal responsibility is clear. The man bore his own sin because he refused to bring the offering in its season. This is a sobering reminder of the holiness of God and the importance of obedience. It also warns against presumption and willful disobedience, reminding us that God’s commands are given for our good and His glory.
