Numbers 9:6

And there were certain men, who were defiled by the dead body of a man, that they could not keep the passover on that day: and they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day:

Numbers 9:6 (KJV)

This verse records a specific incident during Israel’s wilderness journey after the Exodus. The people had received the law at Sinai, including detailed instructions about worship and the Passover. That feast, first established in Exodus 12, commemorated the night when the blood of a lamb on the doorposts caused the Lord to “pass over” the homes of the Israelites, sparing their firstborn from death. That event marked the beginning of their deliverance from slavery.

In Numbers 9, God commands the Israelites to keep the Passover at its appointed time. But some men were unable to do so because they had touched a dead body. According to the law, contact with a corpse made a person ceremonially unclean, meaning they could not take part in holy rituals. This was not a matter of personal sin; it was a condition that required purification. The men did not ignore the law or assume they were exempt. Instead, they came before Moses and Aaron on that very day to present their problem.

The men’s action shows their sincere desire to obey God. They did not treat the Passover as optional. They were troubled that they might miss the appointed time, and they brought their concern to the leaders God had placed over them. Moses did not give an immediate answer. He told them to wait while he sought the Lord’s direction. This shows that when God’s people face a difficult situation, they should bring it to Him and to those He has appointed to guide them.

The following verses record God’s response. He instructed Moses to tell the people that anyone who was unclean because of a dead body, or who was on a distant journey, could keep the Passover one month later, on the fourteenth day of the second month. This provision was not a lowering of God’s standard. It was a way for faithful people to fulfill their obligation even when circumstances made the normal time impossible.

The law concerning uncleanness from a dead body is found in Numbers 19, where the ashes of a red heifer were used for purification. That regulation shows how seriously God treated the defilement of death. The Passover itself pointed forward to a greater deliverance. In the New Testament, the apostle Paul calls Christ “our passover” in 1 Corinthians 5:7, because Jesus’ death on the cross delivers believers from the penalty of sin. Just as the Passover lamb’s blood protected the Israelites, Christ’s blood cleanses those who trust in Him.

This passage teaches that God is compassionate and understanding. He knows that His people face circumstances beyond their control. He does not abandon them when they are unable to do what He has commanded. Instead, He provides a way for them to participate. The men in this story did not stay away in silence; they brought their problem to the leaders and to God. In the same way, believers today can bring their concerns to God in prayer and seek wisdom from mature Christians when they face obstacles to obedience.

The provision also shows that God values the heart’s desire to obey. He did not say that the unclean men were excused from the Passover. He gave them another opportunity to keep it. This teaches that God’s grace does not remove the call to obedience; it enables obedience even in difficult situations. When a believer is hindered by illness, distance, or other unavoidable circumstances, God sees the desire and provides a way to honor Him.

Consider how you respond when you cannot do something you believe God has asked of you. Do you give up, or do you bring the matter to Him? The men in this verse came to Moses and Aaron, and God answered. He is the same God today. He is not rigid or uncaring. He makes room for the faithful who are hindered by things they cannot change. This should encourage every believer to approach God honestly, trusting that He will provide a way to worship and serve Him.
