Numbers Chapter 32

Summery

Chapter 32 of the Book of Numbers in the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible tells the story of the Reubenites and Gadites, two of the twelve tribes of Israel, who approach Moses with a request regarding their inheritance of land. The Reubenites and Gadites were livestock owners and found the land of Jazer and Gilead suitable for their flocks. They requested permission to settle in these lands rather than crossing the Jordan River with the other tribes to inherit the Promised Land.

Moses, initially concerned that the request might discourage the rest of the tribes, reprimands them for their reluctance to fight alongside their brothers. He reminds them of the previous generation’s failure to trust God, resulting in their wandering in the wilderness for forty years.

The Reubenites and Gadites, understanding the gravity of their decision, assure Moses that they will fight alongside their fellow Israelites until all the land is conquered. They agree to settle in the requested lands only after fulfilling their commitment to help secure the Promised Land.

Satisfied with their response, Moses grants their request under the condition that they fulfill their promise. The chapter concludes with the Reubenites and Gadites accepting Moses’ terms and settling in the lands east of the Jordan.
