Philippians 2:10

Listen to this article

“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;”

Philippians 2:10 (KJV) says: This verse is part of a larger passage in the book of Philippians where the apostle Paul encourages believers to have the mind of Christ, to humble themselves, and to serve one another in love. In this particular verse, Paul emphasizes the exaltation and authority of Jesus Christ.

Here are some key points to consider while studying Philippians 2:10:

  • The exalted name of Jesus: The verse begins by declaring that “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.” The name of Jesus holds tremendous power and authority. It is not merely a collection of letters, but a representation of the person and character of Jesus Christ. Throughout the Bible, names hold significant meaning, and the name of Jesus signifies His divine nature and His role as Savior.
  • Universal acknowledgment: The verse continues to explain that every knee should bow “of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth.” This phrase encompasses the entirety of creation. It emphasizes that the authority and lordship of Jesus Christ extend to all realms, including heavenly beings, earthly beings, and even those in the realm of the dead. It speaks of a universal acknowledgement of Jesus’ sovereignty and a submission to His authority.
  • The significance of bowing: Bowing represents an act of submission, reverence, and worship. It is an acknowledgment of the supreme authority and lordship of Jesus Christ. This verse conveys that every created being, regardless of their position or status, will ultimately bow before Jesus. It demonstrates that Jesus is the ultimate authority and deserves the highest honor.
  • The implications for believers: As believers, this verse reminds us of the privileged position we have in Christ. We have recognized Jesus as our Lord and Savior and have willingly submitted to His authority. In doing so, we align ourselves with the truth of this verse, acknowledging the name of Jesus as supreme and deserving of our worship. It also serves as a call to live in obedience and humility, imitating the mindset of Christ, as discussed earlier in the preceding verses.

In summary, Philippians 2:10 emphasizes the exalted name of Jesus, the universal acknowledgment of His authority, and the significance of bowing before Him. It highlights the need for believers to submit to His lordship and live in obedience, recognizing Jesus as the ultimate authority deserving of our worship.
