Philippians 2:11

Listen to this article

“And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Context:To better understand a verse, it’s important to consider its surrounding verses and the broader context. Philippians 2:11 is part of a passage often referred to as the “Christ Hymn” (Philippians 2:5-11), which highlights the humility and exaltation of Jesus Christ. This passage emphasizes the attitude of humility that believers should adopt, following the example of Christ.

Confessing Jesus as Lord:The verse states that “every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” Confession involves openly acknowledging and proclaiming a truth. In this case, it refers to the acknowledgment and declaration that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Jesus Christ is Lord:The phrase “Jesus Christ is Lord” carries profound theological significance. “Jesus” is the name given to the Son of God who came to Earth as the Savior. “Christ” is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew word “Messiah,” meaning the anointed one. “Lord” refers to Jesus’ divine authority and sovereign rule over all creation. By confessing Jesus as Lord, believers acknowledge His divinity, kingship, and supreme authority over their lives.

Glory of God the Father:The confession of Jesus as Lord is done “to the glory of God the Father.” This phrase emphasizes that acknowledging Jesus’ lordship brings glory to God. The Father is exalted when believers recognize and honor His Son’s rightful place of authority. It underscores the unity and shared purpose of the Father and the Son in the plan of salvation.

Implications for believers:Philippians 2:11 encourages believers to openly confess Jesus as Lord. This confession involves not only acknowledging Jesus’ lordship privately but also expressing it publicly. It reflects an attitude of submission, trust, and obedience to Christ’s authority in every aspect of life. Such confession leads to the glorification of God the Father and demonstrates a genuine faith in Jesus as the Savior and Lord.

Application:As we reflect on Philippians 2:11, it reminds us of the importance of making a personal and public declaration of our faith in Jesus Christ. Confessing Jesus as Lord involves aligning our lives with His teachings, submitting to His authority, and acknowledging Him as the ultimate source of salvation and guidance. By doing so, we give glory to God and demonstrate our commitment to following Christ.

  • Remember that studying the Bible involves examining various translations, consulting commentaries, and seeking guidance from trusted spiritual leaders to gain a deeper understanding of the text.
