Philippians 2:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:29
Listen to this article

“Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.”

Context:The book of Philippians was written by the Apostle Paul while he was in prison, addressing the believers in Philippi, a city in Macedonia. The letter is filled with encouragement and exhortation for the Philippian church to remain steadfast in their faith and unity.

Fulfilling Joy:Paul begins by expressing his desire for the believers in Philippi to bring him joy. He encourages them to live in a manner that brings joy and satisfaction to him as their spiritual father. This concept emphasises the importance of unity and shared values within the church.

Likemindedness:The next part of the verse emphasises the need for believers to be “likeminded.” This doesn’t mean that everyone has to think the same way or have identical opinions on every matter. Rather, it refers to having a shared spiritual mindset centred on Christ and His teachings. Believers are called to have a unified purpose and a common commitment to the truth of the gospel.

The Same Love:Paul emphasises the importance of believers having “the same love.” This love refers to the agape love, which is selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional. It is the love that God has shown us through Christ and that believers are called to demonstrate towards one another. This love is a unifying force that binds believers together and reflects the character of Christ.

Being of One Accord:Paul urges the Philippians to be “of one accord.” This means having a harmonious relationship and working together in unity. It implies that believers should set aside personal agendas, differences, and conflicts in order to pursue a common goal. The church is called to be united in purpose, vision, and mission.

One Mind:Finally, Paul encourages the believers to be “of one mind.” This unity of mind involves having a shared understanding and agreement on matters of faith and doctrine. It means being aligned in our thinking and allowing the mind of Christ to guide our thoughts and actions.

Overall, Philippians 2:2 highlights the importance of unity and like-mindedness among believers. It calls us to exhibit the same love, be of one accord, and have one mind. This unity brings joy to those who lead and shepherd us in the faith and also testifies to the world of the transforming power of the gospel.
