Philippians 2:3

Posted on 18 May at 14:29
Listen to this article

“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.”

Context:The book of Philippians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Philippi. In this particular section, Paul is exhorting the believers to live in unity and humility, following the example of Christ.

Avoiding Strife and Vainglory:– Strife: Paul encourages the Philippians to avoid engaging in actions motivated by strife. Strife refers to conflict, contention, or rivalry. It involves selfish ambition and a desire for personal gain at the expense of others.

– Vainglory: Vainglory refers to excessive pride or boasting in oneself. It is a self-centred attitude that seeks recognition, admiration, and applause from others.

Lowliness of Mind:– Humility: Paul emphasises the importance of having a humble mindset. Instead of seeking personal glory or asserting superiority, believers should approach others with an attitude of humility. Humility involves recognising one’s own limitations, putting others’ needs before one’s own, and having a proper perspective of oneself in relation to God and others.

– Esteeming Others: Believers are called to esteem or regard others as more important than themselves. This does not mean devaluing oneself but rather having a selfless attitude that considers the interests and needs of others as significant as their own. It involves treating others with respect, kindness, and genuine care.

The Example of Christ:– Paul highlights the ultimate example of humility in the person of Jesus Christ. In the following verses (Philippians 2:5-11), he describes how Christ willingly humbled Himself, leaving His heavenly glory to become a servant and ultimately giving His life on the cross for humanity’s salvation.

– By following Christ’s example, believers are encouraged to emulate His humility in their interactions with others.

  • Strive for Unity:Avoid engaging in conflicts, rivalries, or self-promotion within the church or any other context. Seek unity and peace among believers.
  • Cultivate Humility:Develop a humble attitude by recognising your own limitations, being open to correction, and considering the needs and interests of others as important as your own.
  • Treat Others with Respect:Practice kindness, patience, and genuine care for others. Value their opinions, needs, and contributions. Seek opportunities to serve and uplift others.

Remember, the goal of this Bible study is not merely intellectual understanding but also personal application. As you reflect on Philippians 2:3, consider how you can practically live out its teachings in your daily life, relationships, and interactions with others.
