Context

The apostle Paul wrote the book of Philippians to the church in Philippi, urging believers to live in unity and humility. In this section, he directly addresses the attitudes that disrupt fellowship and the mindset that builds it up.

Meaning

Paul begins with a comprehensive command: “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory.” The word “strife” denotes conflict, contention, or rivalry, often driven by selfish ambition and a desire for personal gain at the expense of others. It can also mean wrangling over words without regard for truth or the weaknesses of others, conduct that is contrary to the Spirit of the gospel and the peace of the church. “Vainglory” refers to excessive pride or boasting, a self-centered attitude that seeks recognition, admiration, and applause from others.

The positive command is to act “in lowliness of mind,” which is genuine humility. This involves recognizing one’s own limitations, putting others’ needs before one’s own, and maintaining a proper perspective of oneself in relation to God and others. Believers are called to esteem or regard others as more important than themselves. This does not mean devaluing oneself but rather having a selfless attitude that considers the interests and needs of others as significant as one’s own. It is a deliberate choice to treat others with respect, kindness, and genuine care.

Application
