Listen to this article

“But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.”

Context:The Book of Philippians was written by the apostle Paul while he was imprisoned, most likely in Rome. Paul was writing to the Philippian church, expressing his gratitude for their support and encouragement.

In this verse, the apostle Paul is referring to Timothy, his fellow worker in the gospel ministry. Paul had a close relationship with Timothy, whom he considered as a son in the faith. This verse highlights Timothy’s dedication and faithful service to Paul in spreading the gospel.

To understand the verse better, let’s break it down and explore its context:

Timothy’s role:Timothy was a young disciple who accompanied Paul on his missionary journeys. He served as a faithful companion and assistant to Paul. Timothy had a proven track record of devotion and commitment to the cause of Christ.

“Proof of him”:Paul says that the Philippian believers knew the proof or evidence of Timothy’s character and dedication. This suggests that Timothy’s commitment to the gospel was evident and well-known among the Philippian Christians.

“As a son with the father”:Paul compares his relationship with Timothy to that of a father and son. This signifies the close bond they shared and the mentoring role Paul played in Timothy’s life. It also reflects the spiritual connection and guidance Paul provided to Timothy as a more experienced leader.

“He hath served with me in the gospel”:This phrase emphasizes Timothy’s active participation and service alongside Paul in spreading the gospel. Timothy faithfully assisted Paul in various aspects of ministry, such as preaching, teaching, and establishing churches.

Overall, this verse highlights Timothy’s proven character, his close relationship with Paul, and his dedicated service in the ministry of the gospel. It also serves as a commendation from Paul to the Philippian believers, affirming Timothy’s trustworthiness and commitment.
