Philippians 2:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:29
Listen to this article

“For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.”

Context:The book of Philippians is one of the epistles written by the Apostle Paul. In this letter, Paul addresses the church in Philippi, expressing his love and gratitude for their partnership in the gospel. He also encourages them to live in unity and humility, imitating the selfless example of Christ.

The verse begins by stating, “For all seek their own.” Here, Paul is highlighting a prevalent problem among people in general. The natural inclination of humanity is to prioritise one’s own interests, desires, and ambitions above all else. This self-centredness is a result of sin and goes against the teachings of Christ.

In contrast, Paul encourages believers to prioritise “the things which are Jesus Christ’s.” This refers to seeking the will of Christ, His purposes, and the advancement of His kingdom. It involves aligning our desires and priorities with those of Jesus Christ. Rather than pursuing selfish ambitions, Paul urges believers to focus on living in obedience to Christ and fulfilling His purposes.

Selflessness and the Example of Christ:

In the preceding verses (Philippians 2:5-11), Paul presents a powerful depiction of Christ’s humility and selflessness. He describes how Jesus, though equal with God, emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant and willingly humbled Himself to the point of death on the cross. Jesus’ sacrificial act demonstrates the ultimate example of selflessness and puts into perspective the self-centredness of humanity.

Therefore, Paul’s statement in Philippians 2:21 serves as a contrast to Christ’s selflessness. He calls believers to imitate the selfless attitude of Christ, not conforming to the selfish patterns of the world but seeking to live for the glory of God and the advancement of His kingdom.

Application to Our Lives:

This verse challenges us to examine our motives and priorities. It calls us to evaluate whether we are primarily seeking our own interests or genuinely seeking to align our lives with the will and purposes of Jesus Christ. Here are a few practical applications:

  • a) Self-Examination:Take time to reflect on your motives and desires. Are they primarily self-centred or Christ-centred? Are you seeking personal gain or the advancement of God’s kingdom?
  • b) Surrender and Obedience:Cultivate an attitude of surrender to God’s will. Seek to obey His commands and align your life with His purposes, putting aside selfish ambitions.
  • c) Selflessness in Relationships:Apply the principle of selflessness in your interactions with others. Consider the needs and interests of others above your own. Demonstrate the love and humility of Christ in your relationships.
  • d) Prayer and Dependence:Seek God’s guidance and wisdom in decision-making. Rely on Him rather than relying solely on your own understanding and desires.
