Philippians 3:15
“Let us, therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in anything ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.”
Context:The book of Philippians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Philippi while he was imprisoned. In this particular verse, Paul is exhorting the believers to have a unified mindset and to pursue maturity in their faith.
Striving for Perfection:Paul begins by addressing those who consider themselves "perfect" or mature in their faith. It is important to note that Paul is not suggesting that believers can attain absolute perfection in this life but rather encouraging them to continually strive for spiritual maturity and growth. This includes a deepening understanding of the gospel, obedience to God’s Word, and a closer relationship with Christ.
Having the Right Mindset:Paul urges the believers to be "thus minded." This means having a similar mindset or attitude as he has just expressed in the preceding verses. In the previous verses (Philippians 3:7-14), Paul shares his personal pursuit of knowing Christ and pressing toward the goal of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. He values Christ above everything else and counts everything else as loss for the sake of knowing Him. Thus, believers are encouraged to adopt a similar mindset of wholehearted devotion and single-mindedness in their pursuit of Christ.
Openness to Correction:Paul recognises that believers may have differing opinions or areas where they are not yet fully mature. He acknowledges that there may be disagreements or misunderstandings among believers. However, he assures them that if they are genuinely seeking God’s truth, God will reveal any errors or inconsistencies in their thinking. This implies that God is faithful to guide and correct those who are open and willing to receive correction from Him.
Trusting in God’s Guidance:The verse highlights the role of God’s revelation in bringing clarity and unity among believers. It emphasises the need for humility and reliance on God’s wisdom and guidance. As believers continue to seek after God, He will make known to them any areas where they may need correction or adjustment in their thinking or understanding of His truth.
Overall, Philippians 3:15 encourages believers to have a mindset focused on spiritual growth and unity in Christ. It reminds us to remain open to God’s correction and guidance, trusting in His faithfulness to reveal truth to those who earnestly seek Him.
