Listen to this article

“For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ”

Context:The Apostle Paul wrote the book of Philippians while he was imprisoned, expressing his affection and encouragement to the believers in Philippi. In this particular verse, Paul emphasises the heavenly citizenship of believers and their eager expectation of the return of Jesus Christ.

“Our conversation is in heaven”:The word “conversation” in the KJV refers to our citizenship or way of life. As followers of Jesus, our primary allegiance is to the kingdom of heaven. Our conduct, values, and priorities should align with the heavenly principles taught by Christ. We are called to live in a manner consistent with our heavenly citizenship, seeking to honour God in all things.

“From whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ”:This phrase highlights the expectation and anticipation of believers for the return of Jesus Christ. As Christians, we eagerly await the second coming of Christ, which will mark the culmination of God’s redemptive plan. The return of Jesus brings hope, joy, and the fulfilment of God’s promises. We look forward to being united with Him, experiencing His glory, and dwelling with Him eternally.

Implications and Application:

  • Heavenly-mindedness:The verse encourages believers to have a heavenly perspective. Our focus should not solely be on earthly matters but also on eternal realities. This mindset helps us prioritise God’s kingdom and live in a manner that reflects our heavenly citizenship.
  • Eager expectation:The verse reminds us to eagerly anticipate the return of Jesus Christ. This anticipation should fuel our faith, hope, and perseverance in the midst of trials and challenges. It encourages us to live with an eternal perspective, remembering that our ultimate home is with the Lord.
  • Christ-centered living:As we await the return of Christ, we are called to follow Him faithfully, imitating His life, teachings, and character. We should seek to grow in our relationship with Him and allow His presence to transform us from within.

Overall, Philippians 3:20 reminds us that as believers, our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await the return of Jesus Christ. This truth should shape our conduct, priorities, and outlook on life, encouraging us to live in a manner that honours God and reflects our heavenly citizenship.
