Proverbs 10:18

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature found in the Old Testament. It consists of various sayings and instructions to guide people in living a righteous and successful life. Proverbs 10:18 is part of a collection of wise sayings attributed to King Solomon, known as the Proverbs of Solomon.

The importance of truth:The verse begins by highlighting the negative character traits of someone who conceals hatred behind deceitful speech and spreads slanderous remarks. It emphasizes the destructive nature of falsehood and warns against the consequences of dishonesty. Honesty and integrity are fundamental values in the biblical context.

Hiding hatred:Hatred is a strong negative emotion that can lead to harmful actions and broken relationships. However, rather than dealing with the root cause of their feelings or resolving conflicts in a healthy manner, the verse describes a person who masks their hatred by using lying lips. This form of deception not only perpetuates a false image but also perpetuates the harm caused by the hidden animosity.

Slandering:Slander refers to making false and damaging statements about someone with the intention of harming their reputation. This verse cautions against engaging in such behavior. Slander not only demonstrates a lack of love and respect for others but also reveals a lack of wisdom and understanding. It can lead to strife, division, and the breakdown of trust within relationships and communities.

The folly of such actions:The verse concludes by categorizing individuals who engage in these deceitful and slanderous behaviors as fools. In the biblical context, a fool is not merely an unintelligent person but someone who acts foolishly, disregarding wisdom and righteousness. By choosing to hide hatred and spread slander, individuals undermine their own character and display a lack of understanding about the consequences of their actions.

The broader message:Proverbs 10:18 encourages readers to cultivate a lifestyle of honesty, integrity, and love for others. It warns against the dangers of deceitful speech and harmful gossip. The verse reminds us that true wisdom involves genuine love and respect for others, seeking reconciliation rather than fostering animosity and division.
