Proverbs 10:19

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament. It contains practical guidance for living a righteous and wise life. Proverbs 10:19 specifically addresses the importance of controlling one’s speech.

Multitude of Words:The verse begins by highlighting the potential danger in speaking too much. When we speak excessively, we increase the likelihood of sinning with our words. Uncontrolled speech can lead to gossip, slander, lies, and other harmful words that can damage relationships and cause strife.

Sin and the Tongue:The verse emphasizes that in the midst of many words, sin is bound to occur. This highlights the fallen nature of humanity and the tendency to misuse our tongues. The Bible warns us throughout its pages about the power of our words and the need for self-control in speech.

Wisdom in Restraint:The second part of the verse offers the contrasting viewpoint of wisdom. It states that the one who refrains or restrains their lips is considered wise. This implies that exercising self-control over our speech is a characteristic of wisdom. It suggests that a wise person carefully chooses their words, considering their impact and avoiding unnecessary or harmful speech.

Practical Application:Proverbs 10:19 encourages us to be mindful of our words and exercise restraint in our speech. It reminds us that our words have power, and they can either build up or tear down others. By being selective with our words, we can cultivate wisdom and avoid unnecessary conflicts or sin.

  • Reflection and Self-Examination:Take a moment to reflect on your own speech patterns. Are there areas where you struggle with speaking too much or where you have difficulty controlling your words? Consider the impact your words have on others and whether they align with the wisdom taught in Scripture. Pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to help you exercise wisdom and self-control in your speech.
  • Memorization:Memorize Proverbs 10:19 to internalize its message and keep it in your heart. By memorizing this verse, you can bring it to mind in situations where you need to exercise wisdom and restraint in your speech.

Remember, the Bible offers guidance for every aspect of our lives, including our words. Proverbs 10:19 reminds us to be wise with our speech and seek the Holy Spirit’s help in exercising self-control over our tongues.
