Listen to this article

“The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.”

Context and Background:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and practical advice attributed to King Solomon. Proverbs offer guidance for living a righteous and prosperous life, drawing from the wisdom and fear of the Lord. This particular verse addresses the power and value of speech and contrasts the speech of the righteous with that of the wicked.

Understanding the verse:

  • “The tongue of the just is as choice silver”:This phrase highlights the speech of the righteous, emphasizing its quality and worth. Just individuals, those who are upright and follow God’s ways, possess a valuable tongue. Just as silver is precious and highly regarded, the words of the righteous are esteemed and valuable.
  • “The heart of the wicked is little worth”:Here, the verse highlights the character and motives of the wicked. The heart represents the innermost being and reflects a person’s thoughts, desires, and intentions. The verse suggests that the heart of the wicked is of little value or worth. It implies that the wicked person’s inner disposition is corrupt and lacking in integrity, resulting in their speech being of little value or detrimental.

Spiritual Lessons and Applications:

  • The Power of Speech:This verse underscores the significance of our words. It reminds us that our speech has the power to influence and impact others. As believers, we should strive to use our tongues for good, speaking words that build up, encourage, and impart wisdom.
  • Righteousness and Integrity:The verse highlights the value of righteousness and integrity. A just person, whose heart is aligned with God’s ways, will exhibit speech that is valuable and beneficial. It serves as a reminder for us to cultivate righteousness and integrity in our own lives, guarding our hearts and striving to be people of integrity.
  • The Condition of the Heart:The contrast between the righteous and the wicked focuses on the condition of the heart. Our speech reflects the state of our hearts. Therefore, we should examine our hearts regularly, seeking God’s guidance to purify and align our thoughts and desires with His will. A transformed heart will lead to wholesome speech.
  • Reflecting God’s Image:As believers, we are called to imitate Christ and reflect God’s image in all areas of our lives, including our speech. By cultivating righteousness and choosing our words wisely, we can be a testimony to the transforming power of God, bringing glory to Him through our communication.
  • Additional Scriptures:
  • Proverbs 15:23 (KJV): “A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!”
  • Matthew 12:34b (KJV): “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.”
  • Ephesians 4:29 (KJV): “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

In conclusion, Proverbs 10:20 emphasizes the power and value of speech. It reminds us to guard our hearts, cultivate righteousness, and use our words to edify and bring glory to God. By doing so, we can positively impact others and reflect the image of Christ in our communication.
