Proverbs 10:21

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, attributed primarily to King Solomon. It consists of short, concise sayings that provide practical guidance for wise living. Proverbs 10:21 contrasts the speech of the righteous with that of fools.

The Lips of the Righteous:The verse begins by highlighting the impact of the words spoken by the righteous. The phrase “the lips of the righteous” emphasizes the importance of wholesome and righteous speech. The righteous person, who seeks to live in accordance with God’s commands and wisdom, uses their words to benefit others. They use their speech to bring encouragement, edification, and nourishment to those around them.

Feeding Many:The verse states that the lips of the righteous “feed many.” This imagery suggests that the words of the righteous have a nourishing and enriching effect on the lives of others. Through their words, the righteous impart wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, which can have a positive and lasting impact on those who receive them. The righteous person becomes a source of spiritual and practical nourishment, offering guidance, counsel, and encouragement to those in need.

Fools Die for Want of Wisdom:In contrast to the righteous, the verse highlights the fate of fools who lack wisdom. The term “fools” refers to those who disregard God’s wisdom and live according to their own understanding. They lack discernment and understanding, and as a result, they suffer the consequences of their foolish choices. The phrase “die for want of wisdom” suggests that their lack of wisdom leads to their downfall and destruction. They miss out on the guidance and instruction that could have protected and preserved their lives.

Application:

  • Value of Righteous Speech:This verse underscores the importance of the words we speak. As believers, we are called to use our words to build up and encourage others, rather than tearing them down. Our speech should reflect righteousness, love, and wisdom.
  • Impact of Wisdom:The verse highlights the significance of wisdom in our lives. Seeking and embracing God’s wisdom allows us to make wise choices and avoid the destructive consequences of foolishness. We should strive to grow in wisdom by studying and applying God’s Word in our lives.
  • Sharing God’s Wisdom:Just as the lips of the righteous feed many, we are called to share the wisdom we have received from God with others. Our words can have a profound impact on those around us, providing guidance, comfort, and encouragement. We should seek opportunities to speak truth and wisdom into the lives of others, pointing them towards God’s path.

In summary, Proverbs 10:21 highlights the nourishing effect of the righteous person’s speech, which brings wisdom and blessing to others. In contrast, those who lack wisdom suffer the consequences of their foolishness. As believers, we are called to value and practice righteous speech, share God’s wisdom, and seek to grow in wisdom ourselves.
