Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace is joy.

The verse sets two kinds of people side by side. The first group “imagine evil,” meaning they plan or devise harm. Their hearts are filled with deceit, so their inner intentions are corrupt. The second group are “counsellors of peace.” They give wise advice that promotes harmony and reconciliation. To them belongs joy.

The Hebrew parallelism shows that the heart is the source of both evil and good. Evil begins inside a person before it becomes action. Deceit corrupts the whole person, while peacemaking brings a deep, God-given joy that is not mere happiness but true contentment. This joy comes from aligning one’s life with God’s will, so it is a stable blessing rather than a passing feeling.

In conflicts, choose to be a counselor of peace by speaking truth and seeking reconciliation rather than spreading harm.
