Proverbs 12:27
The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.
Proverbs 12:27 (KJV)
Context
This proverb belongs to the wisdom literature of the Old Testament, practical teachings for living a righteous and fruitful life. It contrasts two kinds of people: the slothful man and the diligent man. The imagery of hunting and roasting would have been familiar to the original readers, who understood that catching prey was only the first step. The value of the catch depended on completing the work of preparing and cooking it. This imagery also points to a deeper truth: what is gained must be properly cared for, or it becomes useless.
Meaning
The slothful man takes prey in hunting but does not roast it. He may be quick to pursue something, yet he lacks the commitment to finish what he started. His failure to roast the meat means he cannot enjoy the benefit of his labor. The Hebrew word for slothful can also carry the sense of deceitful, suggesting that gain acquired dishonestly does not last or bring true enjoyment. In contrast, the diligent man values his substance. His wealth is precious because it is gained through honest industry and comes with a blessing, bringing comfort and lasting value. The verse teaches that diligence involves not just acquiring resources but also faithfully stewarding and completing the work necessary to benefit from them. Laziness leads to waste and loss, while diligence leads to precious and enduring substance.
Biblical connections
This teaching aligns with the broader wisdom of Proverbs, which repeatedly warns against laziness and commends hard work. For example, Proverbs 10:4 says that a slack hand brings poverty, while the hand of the diligent makes rich. The connection is direct: diligence is not merely about effort but about faithful stewardship of what God provides. The verse also echoes the principle that God blesses the work of the righteous, while the gain of the wicked does not prosper. This proverb is part of the practical wisdom traditionally attributed to Solomon, aimed at guiding God’s people in everyday choices.
Application
This verse calls us to examine our own habits. Are we completing what we start? Do we take responsibility for the resources and opportunities that come our way? The slothful man’s failure to roast what he caught shows neglect and lack of accountability. In contrast, the diligent person recognizes the value of what they have and takes the necessary steps to make the most of it. This applies to our daily work, our relationships, and our spiritual lives. Diligence in seeking God, studying His Word, and living out our faith leads to growth and a closer walk with Him. We must also ask whether we pursue gain honestly, for what is obtained by deceit will not prosper.
Reflection
The call is to move from slothfulness to diligence, not merely for material benefit, but as an expression of faithful, wise living. When we complete the work God has given us and steward our resources well, we honor Him and experience the precious rewards of a committed life. Let us ask God to give us the perseverance to finish what we begin and the wisdom to value what is truly precious.
