Proverbs 13:7

There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.

Proverbs 13:7 (KJV)

Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed to King Solomon. These short teachings use parallelism to guide daily life. This verse contrasts two kinds of people by their outward appearance and their true condition. The contrast is not mainly about money, but about the difference between what we show and what we really have.

The Hebrew verb behind “maketh himself” suggests pretending or presenting oneself as something one is not. The first person appears rich, perhaps through fine clothes or a proud manner, yet has nothing of lasting value. This may include someone who is spiritually bankrupt, with no genuine treasure before God. The second person seems poor or lives humbly, yet possesses great riches, such as faith, contentment, wisdom, and the fear of the Lord. These are worth far more than material wealth. The verse warns against self-deception and pride, and it commends honesty and humility.

Proverbs consistently teaches that wisdom and the fear of the Lord are more valuable than gold and silver. A good name and integrity are better than great wealth. This verse agrees with that teaching, showing that true treasure is not measured by possessions. The book calls us to value what lasts, not what fades.

This verse challenges us to examine our own hearts. Do we live for the approval of others, or are we content with the riches that come from God? It encourages us to be honest about our true state and to value spiritual wealth over material appearances. We can choose simplicity and generosity, knowing that God sees our hearts and rewards what is genuine. We do not need to project an image of success when we trust in Him.

Consider what you truly treasure. Are you investing in things that last, such as character, relationships, and the Kingdom of God? True riches are found in a close relationship with God, not in outward show. Let this verse lead you to seek contentment and integrity, and to rest in the eternal wealth that God gives to those who trust Him.
