Proverbs 14:13
Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.
Proverbs 14:13 (KJV)
Context
The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom sayings attributed to King Solomon, who received extraordinary wisdom from God. These sayings give practical guidance for righteous living and show how godly choices shape daily life.
Meaning
This verse contrasts outward laughter with inward sorrow. A person may laugh and appear cheerful while the heart carries grief. The word “mirth” means noisy joy or celebration, yet the proverb says its end is heaviness. Superficial happiness cannot remove deep pain; it may even hide it for a time.
The verse warns against trusting outward joy as a true sign of well-being. It also teaches that human emotions are complex. Laughter and sorrow can exist together in the same heart. What begins as light amusement may end in sadness, especially when joy is built on temporary things. This proverb encourages self-examination: believers should not assume that outward cheerfulness reflects inner well-being, and they should be honest about their own sorrows.
Biblical connections
This wisdom echoes the teaching that lasting joy comes from God, not from circumstances. The same book later says a cheerful heart is good medicine (Proverbs 17:22), but that cheerfulness must be rooted in trust in the Lord, not in pretence.
Application
We should not assume that someone who laughs is free from sorrow. This proverb calls us to be gentle and compassionate toward others, ready to listen and support those who may be hurting inside. It also invites us to examine our own hearts honestly, rather than hiding pain behind a cheerful face.
True joy is not found in mere laughter or merriment. It comes from a right relationship with God, who gives peace that remains even in difficult times. We can bring our sorrows to Him and receive His comfort. This deeper joy does not depend on outward circumstances; it endures when mirth fades.
Reflection
When we feel heaviness beneath our laughter, we can turn to God honestly. He sees the heart and offers a deeper, lasting joy that does not fade when circumstances change.
