In the light of the king’s countenance is life; and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.

The “light of the king’s countenance” means the joy and kindness that shine from a pleased ruler. This light brings life, both physical and spiritual. A fair and just king creates an environment where people can thrive, with good governance, safety, and provision. On a deeper level, this light also pictures God’s favor. When His face shines upon His people, they receive spiritual life, joy, and guidance. The second half of the verse compares this favor to “a cloud of the latter rain.” The latter rain is the spring rain that falls just before harvest.
