Listen to this article

“A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, written primarily by King Solomon. It contains practical advice and guidance for living a righteous and wise life. Proverbs 17:18 is a proverb that focuses on the importance of wisdom and understanding in making commitments or financial agreements.

“A man void of understanding”: This phrase refers to a person who lacks wisdom, discernment, and good judgment. The verse emphasizes the negative consequences that can arise from such a person’s actions.

“Striketh hands”: This phrase refers to making a pledge or agreement by shaking hands with someone. It symbolizes entering into a contract or becoming a guarantor for someone else.

“And becometh surety in the presence of his friend”: The verse warns about the dangers of becoming a surety or a guarantor for someone’s debt or financial obligations, especially when done without understanding or wisdom. The term “friend” here suggests that the person being asked to become surety may have a close relationship with the individual seeking assistance.

Interpretation:The verse cautions against rashly and impulsively committing oneself to guarantee someone else’s debts or obligations. It highlights the importance of discernment and understanding before making such agreements. When a person lacks wisdom and understanding, they may fail to consider the potential risks and consequences involved in becoming surety for another person. This can lead to financial burdens, strained relationships, and other negative outcomes.

Application:Proverbs 17:18 encourages us to exercise caution and wisdom when making commitments or financial agreements, especially those that involve assuming responsibility for someone else’s debts. It reminds us to consider the potential consequences and evaluate whether we have the means and understanding to fulfill such obligations. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of seeking counsel and guidance from wise individuals before entering into such agreements.

  • Overall: Proverbs 17:18 serves as a reminder to approach commitments and financial obligations with wisdom and understanding, ensuring that we make informed decisions that align with God’s principles.
