Proverbs 17:19

He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.

Proverbs 17:19 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed mainly to King Solomon. These sayings give practical guidance for living rightly before God and with other people. Proverbs 17:19 sits among teachings about wisdom, relationships, and the results of our choices. The verse has two parallel lines that together warn against two linked dangers: loving conflict and lifting oneself up.

The first line, “He loveth transgression that loveth strife,” means that a person who enjoys quarrels is also drawn to wrongdoing. The word “transgression” means breaking God’s commands or doing what is wrong. Strife becomes sin when it comes from a bad heart, aims at harming others, or concerns things that do not matter. This does not forbid standing firmly for the truth or contending for the faith of the Gospel. Such striving is lawful when the matter is important and the motive is love.

The second line, “he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction,” uses the picture of a person building a high doorway. In ancient times, a large gate showed wealth and status. To exalt one’s gate means to promote oneself, to seek honor and attention. This kind of pride leads to ruin. The verse teaches that love of conflict and pride are connected, and both end in downfall.

This proverb agrees with the wider teaching of Scripture. Romans 12:18 urges believers to live peaceably with all people as far as it depends on them, which directly applies the call to avoid strife. Pride is also condemned throughout the Bible, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. The wise person avoids both strife and self-exaltation, while the fool embraces them and suffers the results.

  • Avoid strife: Instead of seeking conflicts, pursue peace and reconciliation. Practice forgiveness, humility, and careful listening.

  • Reject transgression: Do not take part in words or actions that cause division, slander, or discord. Cultivate a heart that loves righteousness.

  • Embrace humility: Do not seek to raise your own status. Recognize your dependence on God and find fulfillment in serving others.

  • Seek God’s wisdom: Read the Scriptures, pray for guidance, and apply wise principles in daily decisions. This helps you avoid the pitfalls of pride and quarreling.

This verse calls us to examine our hearts. Do we enjoy winning arguments more than making peace? Do we secretly desire to be noticed and praised? True wisdom chooses the lowly path of humility and peace. When we let go of strife and self-promotion, we walk in the way that leads to life and honor from God.
