Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

Context

Proverbs is wisdom literature in the Old Testament, traditionally attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical guidance for righteous living. Proverbs 19:29 is one of many sayings that contrast the wise with the foolish.

The verse names two kinds of people: scorners and fools. A scorner mocks wisdom and correction, while a fool ignores sound instruction. Both face consequences that are already prepared for them.

Meaning

“Judgments” here means punishment or adverse consequences that come upon those who reject wisdom. The verse declares that divine judgment is certain for those who continually resist the path of wisdom. It is not a threat but a statement of divine justice: consequences are prepared and sure.

“Stripes for the back of fools” refers to physical chastisement. In ancient times, stripes were blows or lashes given as discipline. Fools, in the biblical sense, are those who lack understanding and persist in foolish behavior. Such individuals will experience the disciplinary consequence of their folly.

Biblical connections

The certainty of judgment for those who reject God appears also in the New Testament. Jesus speaks of everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41). This connection shows that the principle of prepared judgment runs throughout Scripture. Those who scorn God’s wisdom and persist in folly face not only earthly consequences but also the reality of eternal judgment.
