Proverbs 2:2

Posted on 18 May at 15:11
Listen to this article

“So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding.”

Proverbs 2:2 (KJV) Proverbs 2:2 encourages the reader to actively pursue wisdom and understanding. Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning in more detail:

“So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom” suggests that we should lean in and pay close attention to wisdom. Inclining our ears implies a posture of attentiveness and willingness to listen. It signifies that we should be receptive to wisdom, seeking it eagerly.

“And apply thine heart to understanding” urges us to engage our hearts in the pursuit of understanding. Applying our hearts means dedicating our inner being, emotions, and desires to gaining insight and discernment. It involves a deep commitment to seeking knowledge and applying it to our lives.

Together, these two phrases emphasize an active and intentional approach to acquiring wisdom and understanding. It requires not only passive reception but also active engagement and personal investment.

Now, let’s explore the broader context of Proverbs 2 to gain a deeper understanding of this verse:

Proverbs 2 is a chapter that highlights the benefits of wisdom and understanding. It encourages the reader to actively seek wisdom, promising that by doing so, they will gain knowledge, discernment, and protection. The chapter advises against falling into the snares of wickedness and the adulterous woman, emphasizing the importance of moral integrity and following the path of righteousness.

In the surrounding verses, Proverbs 2:3-5 (KJV) further explains the process of seeking wisdom:

  • “Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
  • If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
  • Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.”

These verses reinforce the message that acquiring wisdom requires active pursuit. We are encouraged to cry out for knowledge, lift our voices for understanding, and seek wisdom as we would valuable treasures. By doing so, we will come to understand the fear of the Lord and find knowledge of God.

In summary, Proverbs 2:2 teaches us that gaining wisdom and understanding is not a passive endeavor but an active pursuit that requires attentiveness, commitment, and engagement of the heart. As we incline our ears to wisdom and apply our hearts to understanding, we position ourselves to receive the benefits of knowledge, discernment, and a deeper relationship with God.
