Posted on 18 May at 15:11
Listen to this article

“Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature attributed primarily to King Solomon, known for his God-given wisdom. It offers practical guidance for living a godly and successful life. Proverbs 2 specifically emphasizes the benefits of seeking wisdom and understanding.

Seeking knowledge:The verse begins with an affirmation: “Yea,” which indicates agreement and encouragement. It highlights the importance of actively seeking knowledge. It suggests that knowledge is not something that comes effortlessly; it requires initiative and effort on our part. The act of crying out for knowledge demonstrates a passionate desire and fervent pursuit of wisdom.

Crying out for knowledge:“Crying” suggests a sense of urgency and sincerity in seeking wisdom. It involves a heartfelt plea, indicating a recognition of our need for divine insight and guidance. It emphasizes the idea that we should approach God with humility, acknowledging our limitations and dependence on Him for wisdom.

Lifting up your voice:“Lifting up thy voice” implies a bold and earnest appeal. It suggests that our pursuit of understanding should not be passive or half-hearted. Rather, it should be a sincere and persistent endeavour. We are called to express our desire for understanding to God openly and honestly.

Understanding:The verse also highlights the importance of seeking understanding. Knowledge and understanding are often linked in the book of Proverbs, emphasizing that knowledge alone is not enough. Understanding involves comprehending the implications and applications of the knowledge we acquire. It helps us discern right from wrong, make wise choices, and live according to God’s principles.
