Proverbs 20:11

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

Proverbs 20:11 (KJV)

The Book of Proverbs is wisdom literature in the Old Testament. It offers practical guidance for daily life through short, memorable sayings. Proverbs 20:11 teaches that a person’s character is revealed by their actions, even from childhood. This verse sits within a broader context that values integrity and righteousness as foundations of a wise life.

The word “known” shows that deeds reflect the inner person. A child’s behaviour gives insight into their disposition. The verse names two qualities of conduct: purity and rightness. Purity means integrity, honesty, and moral uprightness. Rightness means actions that align with God’s standard of what is just and good.

This verse highlights personal responsibility. Even children are accountable for their actions, and their choices reveal character and carry consequences. It also points to the early formation of character. Habits formed in childhood often persist, so observing a child’s conduct can indicate their moral foundation and future direction. Parents and mentors can use this observation to guide children toward godly training and direction. The principle applies to adults as well, calling for consistency between outward behavior and inward character.

The principle that actions reveal character is consistent with the teaching that a tree is known by its fruit (Matthew 7:16). Genuine faith and character show themselves in observable behaviour. This verse does not teach salvation by works; rather, it shows that what is inside a person becomes visible through what they do.

  • Self-reflection: Examine your own deeds. Ask whether your work is pure and right in God’s sight, and grow in accountability.

  • Parental guidance: Parents and caregivers shape a child’s character. Teach and model moral values from an early age, and pay attention to a child’s conduct as a guide for training.

  • Discernment: Evaluate the actions of others wisely. Remember that behaviour reveals character, but not always perfectly, so seek God’s wisdom in judgment.

This verse calls for consistency between outward behaviour and inward character. It reminds believers that their actions are a testimony. Nurture purity and righteousness from a young age, and let your deeds match your faith. The verse also challenges each reader to ask whether their own work is pure and right in God’s sight.
