Proverbs 20:27

The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

Proverbs 20:27 (KJV)

Proverbs is part of the wisdom literature of the Old Testament. It gives practical guidance for moral and ethical living, often using vivid word pictures to teach deep truths.

The verse compares the human spirit to a candle or lamp. A candle gives light in darkness, and the spirit of man gives light within a person. This spirit is not self-made; it is the Lord’s candle, placed in each person by God.

The “spirit of man” means the innermost part of a person, the core of their being. It includes the intellect, emotions, conscience, and will. This is the part of us that can know God and understand spiritual things.

The “candle of the Lord” shows that God is the source of this light. He lights the human spirit so that it can reveal truth. The spirit does not shine by its own power alone; it shines because God has made it a lamp.

The phrase “searching all the inward parts of the belly” points to the deepest thoughts, motives, and desires of a person. The spirit, under God’s light, examines what is hidden inside. This is not merely self-reflection; it is a searching done under the Lord’s authority, because the spirit is His lamp.

Sin has dimmed this light. What was once bright now gives only a glimmer of divine truth. Yet the spirit remains a light by which people can seek God and know His will. Conscience acts as God’s deputy in the soul, a candle lit by Him and for Him.

This verse connects with the truth that God made humans in His image, giving them knowledge and righteousness. The human soul has dignity because it is a divine light, a candle lit by God. Through reason and conscience, people can discern character and motives, both in themselves and in others.

We should not be satisfied with a shallow look at ourselves. Instead, we should ask God to let His light search our hearts, revealing hidden motives and desires. When the light shows us sin, we should confess it and turn from it.

We can also use the discernment God has given us to live wisely. By examining our own hearts and the world around us, we grow in self-awareness and moral responsibility. This leads us to align our lives with God’s wisdom.

  • Allow the Lord’s light to search your heart daily, and respond to what it reveals.

  • Use your God-given discernment to make wise choices that honor Him.

The candle of the Lord within us is both a gift and a responsibility. It gives us the ability to know ourselves and to know God. Let us keep this light burning by staying close to Him, so that it may guide us in all we do.
