Proverbs 21:21
Hee that followeth after righteousnesse and mercy, findeth life, righteousnesse and honour. Proverbs 21:21 (KJV)
The phrase “He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour” is often cited, though it does not appear in the canonical texts of the King James Version of the Bible. This statement highlights several key principles that are significant for leading a righteous and fulfilling life, and it can be understood in three main points.
First, the verse emphasizes the importance of actively seeking righteousness and mercy. Righteousness refers to living in accordance with God’s moral standards and obeying His commands. Mercy entails showing compassion, forgiveness, and kindness to others, reflecting the mercy we have received from God. Believers are encouraged to pursue these virtues in their daily lives, allowing their character to be shaped by godly standards.
Second, the passage suggests that those who pursue righteousness and mercy will experience life. In a spiritual sense this points to the abundant life that Jesus promised to His followers (John 10:10), a life marked by joy, peace, and a deep relationship with God. By aligning actions and attitudes with righteousness and mercy, believers can enjoy the richness and fullness of life in God’s kingdom.
Finally, the pursuit of righteousness and mercy is associated with receiving both righteousness and honor. God blesses and rewards those who walk in His ways. The righteousness mentioned may include the imputed righteousness received through faith in Christ as well as the practical righteousness evident in one’s actions. Honor indicates that those who embody these virtues are respected and esteemed by others, because their character reflects godly values.
