Proverbs 21:28

A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh constantly.

Proverbs 21:28 (KJV)

Proverbs is Old Testament wisdom literature, offering practical guidance for righteous living. King Solomon, known for God-given wisdom, authored many of these sayings. This verse belongs to a collection addressing truthfulness, integrity, and moral conduct in daily life. The legal setting is important: honest testimony in court was vital for justice, and the principle extends to all speech.

The proverb warns that a false witness will perish. Such a person gives dishonest testimony or spreads lies, and the result is destruction: loss of reputation, legal punishment, and ultimately judgment. In contrast, the man who hears speaks constantly. The Hebrew word for “heareth” implies attentive, obedient listening, not merely hearing sounds. His words are established, enduring, and reliable because they are grounded in what he has truly heard. The liar’s words are unstable and self-destructive, while the listener’s speech is trustworthy and lasting. This contrast shows that truthfulness and careful listening are inseparable.

Scripture consistently links truthfulness with godly character. Jesus taught that our words will be judged (Matthew 12:36-37), and James warns about the power of the tongue (James 3:2-6). These passages reinforce the principle that careful listening to truth, especially divine truth, equips a person to speak faithfully. The New Testament echoes the same theme: our speech reflects what fills our hearts.

  • Truthfulness: Uphold integrity in every word, avoiding falsehood that damages both self and others.

  • Listening and discernment: Be a good listener; hearing carefully before speaking demonstrates wisdom and respect.

  • Courage and boldness: Stand firm in truth, defending what is right even when difficult, for true security rests in God’s presence.

  • Integrity in relationships: Honest speech builds trust within families, churches, and communities, fostering safe environments.

  • Guard against deception: Remain vigilant against the temptation to lie, aligning thoughts and words with God’s standard of truth.

A person who listens well is equipped to speak well. By cultivating the habit of listening to God’s Word, believers gain a firm foundation for their speech. Their words become constant, faithful, and true, and they will stand firm while the liar will not endure. This promise encourages us to pursue integrity in every conversation.
